Harper Adams University - Prospectus 2024

The first three years of the course equip students with day one skills and competences required by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) to practise as a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN). All full-time BSc (Hons) students study the same modules in first year before starting to specialise in line with their chosen stream. You’ll also complete a full year in industry, like all Harper Adams students in second year. As a veterinary nursing student, you will also follow a 10-week placement during the summer break after your first year of studies. This gives you the time to become an integral part of a veterinary team and follow cases through, having completed the first-year core VNmodules – allowing you to put the skills and knowledge of a Student Veterinary Nurse into practice. In the final year, you will have the opportunity to study different species such as exotics, horses and large animals. You’ll continue to concentrate on veterinary nursing and complete modules in rehabilitation therapy or companion animal behaviour, relevant to your chosen stream. Throughout your studies, you will have access to specialist facilities, all on one campus, including our Companion Animal House, a range of farm livestock and a bespoke Veterinary Education Centre, with consulting rooms and diagnostic equipment, serving a range of veterinary para- professionals. The University was awarded almost £500,000 in December 2021 to help fund the second phase of work to support teaching and learning in veterinary medicine, veterinary nursing, veterinary physiotherapy and allied para-professions at Harper Adams. The grant was awarded to fund the purchase of equipment for animal handling and housing; large animal anatomy models and the refurbishment of the veterinary nursing building – where future Registered Veterinary Nurses and future veterinary surgeons will put their clinical skills into practice. This work was all completed in September 2022, ready for all future VN’s to enjoy! Readmore about the Veterinary Education Centre. Veterinary Nursing routes: • BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing • BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing with Companion Animal Behaviour • BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing with Small Animal Rehabilitation You will graduate as a confident, competent Registered Veterinary Nurse, equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to go straight into veterinary practice – as evidenced by our outstanding graduate employment statistics. After spending some time in practice, you might wish to return to complete postgraduate level study: routes cover oncology, anaesthesia, pain management and surgical nursing. These streams allow students to tailor their degree towards an area of interest, whilst still fulfilling the RCVS requirements for registration. *Graduate Outcomes 2022 100% of Veterinary Nursing graduates in employment or further education* HARPER.AC.UK | 73
