Harper Adams University - Prospectus 2024
Zoology Our zoologists and entomologists are part of the global answer to extinction. Protecting endangered species and wildlife from threats such as habitat loss, disease, invasive species and climate change. By protecting these species, we also preserve our way of life – from clean air and fresh water to medicines and building materials. Some of the smallest creatures on our planet have the biggest impact on mankind. Here at Harper, we present zoology in its widest (and potentiallywildest) sense, from cells and tissues, through animals and animal populations, to local and global issues of conservation and welfare. You’ll study whole organisms, not just species at the molecular level. You’ll look at animals’ physiology, behaviour, and how they interact with other species and their environments. Plus, you’ll take learning out of the classroom and into fields and laboratories. *Estimated by the UN Environment Programme • Understand various environments – including natural, managed and domestic. This knowledge will help you advise on improving animal welfare, conservation measures and reversing species decline • Understand animal behaviour and health on an individual species level, at a community level and in how it relates to human health and to the One Health approach to a sustainable future • Research your own original project – nurturing your investigative and analytical skills; which are so highly sought after, and allowing you to be research-ready for your future studies and careers one land-based specieswill go extinct. That’s six anhour, 150 a day, nearly 55,000 a year*. Become aHarper Zoologist and youwill be able to: A rate that we can’t allow to rise – and should be aiming to decrease In the time it takes you to read these pages, 64 | UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2024
