Harper Adams University - Prospectus 2024
Home grown Research in partnership with DEFRA aims to uncover if indoor farming is a viable possibility as demands on land continues to rise. Read more. 1. Howdo I get in? Aside from the typical academic qualifications (check the website for latest entry requirements for each route), you don't need any added work experience ahead of starting our Agriculture degrees here at Harper. According to DEFRA, only 0.2%of agricultural workers are from a BAME background, only 16%of farmholders are women and general farmworkers are slowly on the decline – facts we are committed to changing either through diversifying or upskilling. While practical experience is encouraged, our course programmesmean that regardless of background, agriculture should feel like a viable career option if that’s where your passion lies. For those students who feel they might struggle due to lack of hands-on farmexperience, we offer additional support alongside skills training to help you get up to speed. With the added benefit of a placement year, what you can't experience at Harper, you'll be able to experience in industry. What are the career prospects? The employability of our Agriculture graduates is excellent, and there aremany diverse career opportunities in all sectors of the food chain. The applied nature of our courses, teachingmethods and close links with industry give you the academic, technical, interpersonal and employment skills that are highly sought after by employers. As an agriculture graduate youmay go on to manage farms either at home or elsewhere, for example with Velcourt, Sentry Farming, Dyson Farming or G’s Fresh. Alternatively, youmay opt for a career in the support industries: example employers include Frontier Agriculture, NFU, Savills; or advisory services such as DEFRA and ADAS. Studying agriculture also develops the skills needed for other graduate careers such as accountancy, teaching, journalism, or the civil service. HARPER.AC.UK | 19
