Alongside a dedicated Student Advisor, who is able to offer first line advice, we also have our Student Wellbeing Officer, Learner Support colleagues, Course Tutors and the wider Student Services team to ensure your life here at Harper is a success. Arriving atHarper Here at Harper, your university life starts in September – with an action- packed Welcome Week and Freshers’ Festival to kick off the academic year! With an induction programme led by Student Services and your course teams, plus a social programme managed by the Students’ Union, there will be plenty of activities on offer to help you feel at home on Harper soil from the very beginning. Emotional andmental health Feeling nervous and apprehensive is often a normal part of your first year of university – but if these feelings start to evolve into much deeper anxiety and depression, our trained staff are here to help. Our Student Wellbeing Officer is your first port of call for any personal or mental health concerns – or even if you just need a friendly ear. Youmay be referred to our BACP registered counsellor or the student mental health and wellbeing advisor (RGN) if we think youmight benefit. Student LifeRepresentatives (SLR) Halls should be your home away from home, which is why it’s so important you feel safe in them! As well as our out-of-hours Residence Officers, each hall block has its own SLR. These final year students are trained in first aid, fire safety, drugs awareness, student support and have a unique understanding as to how exactly you’re feeling – having lived and studied here themselves! There is also a robust rota system in place so help will be available around the clock. Accommodation Struggling to choose your accommodation? Our Student Services team can give advice on which halls will suit your needs best, as well as support you through living independently and settling in. Chaplaincy Our team of chaplains are here to listen to students and staff of all faiths (or none), whatever worries or issues you may have. Our Harper community can reflect or pray in the multi-faith quiet room as well as explore the local area and its many places of worship. Healthcare If you ever find yourself unwell during your time at university, Linden Hall Surgery offers appointments, Monday to Friday via our on-campus clinic. Don’t worry if you’re still registered to your local doctors, we can support surgery registrations at the start of the academic term, if you would like. For any out of hours care, consultations can be arranged through the ShropDoc advisory service or NHS 111. Financial support If you find yourself struggling financially, we’re here to talk. Community charter. HarperAdamsUniversity is committed to protecting its students’ rights to live and learn in a safe environment. Our charter (which you can find in the Student Handbook) explains the expectations we have of all members of the University community – staff included. Principals include mutual respect, supporting development, maintaining a safe community, embracing inclusivity, diversity and equality, encouraging and supporting wellbeing, fairness and transparency. Youmay be entitled to help from the Access to Learning Fund (ALF), which can help both undergraduate and postgraduate students during financial hardship. Most awards don’t have to be paid back at all, with some short term interest free loans available in exceptional circumstances. Once you have applied for ALF through Student Services, the University will look at your needs and decide howmuch you are entitled to. The money can be paid in a lump sumor in instalments and will be on top of your other student finance. However, in order to qualify youmust have already taken out the full student loan that was available to you. Students can also receive financial help through scholarships . The University’s Development Trust is a charity that works with industry and alumni to offer exclusive scholarships to current Harper Adams students. More than £500,000 of scholarships* are offered each year; most include financial help, with some also offering paid placement opportunities. International students Coming to Harper fromoverseas? Great! Our international students have a personalised induction before the start of term in order to introduce them to UK life and the University. We can help you arrange visas, get study or personal support, find part-time work or further study opportunities, careers advice and anything else youmight need.
