Our guest speakers have included: • UK Chief Veterinary Officer, Professor Christine Middlemiss – one-time guest speaker and now official Visiting Professor! • Dr George McGavin – Scotland’s answer to David Attenborough and the star of BBC programmes ‘Lost Land of the Jaguar’, ‘Tomorrow’s World’ and ‘Monkey Planet’ • Ellen Humphrey – Lead Officer for Natural Resources Wales, who talked about the importance of forest sustainability, replanting and the role future graduates had to play • Karen Mercer – Master of the Worshipful Company of Farmers, who shared her thoughts on the importance of networking and liveries in the farming industry • Harriet Wilson – Head of Agriculture and Sustainable Sourcing at McDonalds UK & Ireland who spoke out on diversifying the talent pool in the food sector and the innovations needed to succeed • Russell Rowley – Chief Executive of the Severn Gorge Countryside Trust, who spoke on the delicate balance between woodland communities and social, economic and environmental objectives • Charlie Ireland – Land Agent and ‘Cheerful Charlie’ from Clarkson Farm fame • Lizzie Wilson – Head of the National Pig Association, who, in her seminar, spoke of the incredible impact she thought Harper graduates could having on the pig industry • Stefan Gates – Renowned gastroentomologist and host of over 20 BBC television programmes, including ‘Cooking in the Danger Zone’ And so many more! Senior Lecturer Dr Helen Pittson specialises in human nutrition, public health, wellbeing and healthy lifestyles for older people. Over 10 years in public health, Helen worked on a vast range of public health interventions including adult weight management; sport and exercise; walking for health; healthy lifestyles for families; community food projects; workplace health; childhood obesity; weight management in pregnancy; and wellbeing and healthy lifestyles for older people. “Linking food, nutrition and wellbeing is vital to ensure populations are able to live happy and healthy lives. Working with students to explore these evolving areas is exciting and leads to new innovative food products and ways of communicating with the public.” Senior Lecturer Suzanne Edwards is a Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) who has worked in first opinion practice and taught at a number of education institutions. Suzanne’s specialist interests lie in diagnostic imaging, cardiology, professional practise and quality assurance and she aims to help students to understand the importance of these skills before they go out into practice.
