Research centres Harper Adams University doesn’t just share knowledge through learning and teaching – we also develop new knowledge through world-leading research. This work then informs all of our teaching. The last UK Research Excellence Framework concluded that more than 60 per cent of research conducted by Harper Adams University is either world leading or internationally excellent. The work is organised into a series of research centres to align our specialist subjects. There is the Centre for Crop and Environmental Science – which has sub groups specialising in Crop Science, Pathology, Soil andWater, Entomology and Nematology. The Animal Science Research Centre has the Animal Welfare and Behaviour Group; Monogastric Group; Dairy, Heifer and Calf Group; Institute for Sustainable Health andWelfare (InSHAW); Beef and Sheep Group and Companion Animal Health Sciences Research Group. From the Efficiency For Access Design Challenge to the food production development contest with GOSH!, to the Countryfile Young Countryside Champion and the Royal Entomological Society's RES Student Competition, we like to find ways to let our students put what they know into practice in front of a broader audience. Andrew Black squeezed a lifetime of experience into the ten years after he graduated from the Harper Adams REALM degree. He managed large estates and corporate portfolios for clients including the Crown Estate, Ministry of Defence, Church Commissioners, Bournville Village Trust and the National Children’s Home, all before becoming an Associate Partner and qualifying as a Registered Valuer in 2010. He now brings all of that experience, and extensive industry connections to his current role as a senior lecturer. AHarper Adams Professor has returned to the University where she gained her undergraduate degree as a sustainability expert – whose sought-after views draw upon her experiences in both Britain and America. Professor Jude Capper worked in America as both a postdoctoral researcher and as university faculty staff, with a particular interest in emissions in the US dairy industries. She has now brought her experiences in Europe and the Americas to her role as both an independent expert and to her role at Harper Adams where she holds the ABP Chair of Sustainable Beef and Sheep Production. Jude’s research has been presented inmore than 15 countries, and in publications in Europe, Africa and America. In her role as Chair she works alongside ABP, one of the leading firms working in the meat and agri-food sectors in the British Isles, to investigate, improve and communicate the importance of sustainable beef and sheep systems to all - from the consumer through to the retailer and policymaker. Taking up the role, Jude said: “British farmers lead the world in sustainable food production – we must identify and nurture the next generation of researchers and teachers so there’s a continuous flow of talent into academia to continue the research that underpins this trend. “ Aglobal perspective Crown and country 96 | UNDERGRADUATE PROSPECTUS 2024
