Will Awan Agriculture with Animal Science student, Will Awan started his first agriculture business at age 13 –many years before he’dmake hismark at Harper and without any traditional agriculture experience. After the sale of his first Dexter pedigree cattle and turkey smallholding at age 15, Will started to invest – developing the Exmoor Horn flock and farmbusiness he still runs now, alongside his university studies and a successful Agri-Marketing business. If that wasn’t enough, Will is also a successful showman having won a series of awards at the Royal Welsh, Royal Bath andWest, Exmoor Horn and Hereford shows; and last year added a British Farming Award Agricultural Student of the Year silver award to his trophy cabinet. HenryMason Henry Mason expanded, future- proofed and diversified his family’s arable farm by adding a flock of 64,000 free range egg producing chickens. Henry started the poultry branch of the farm to ensure the business had a consistent cashflow, as well as the yearly lump sum from arable produce. “A lot of the courses at Harper Adams focus on sustainability , which got me thinking about how we could make the most of our least productive grassland in terms of profitability and sustainability." Reducing the farm’s carbon footprint was also paramount to the Agriculture with Crop Management graduate’s business plans. harper.ac.uk/ck64 Emma Buckley “Buckley’s bees was born out of absolute passion and an evidence-based belief in the amazing value of the honey bee and the good they do in the world." Agri-business graduate Emma Buckley, alongside her father and successful beekeeper for 53 years, David, set up Buckley’s Bees to promote bee-keeping and to educate the younger generations about the importance of the honey bee in agriculture. Since Emma set up her business, it’s been a hive of activity and has now expanded into the corporate world, offering businesses the chance to have their own, fully managed hive on site or to sponsor one in the Buckley’s Cheshire-based apiary. “At last the environmental message is being taken to heart and interest is picking up… Bees are the key to a balanced ecosystem and we make engaging with them accessible.
