Stafford A 30-minute drive across the county border and you’ll find yourself in Staffordshire and its county town of Stafford. Known for its Ancient High House, oatcakes and the sprawling deer- trodden trails of Cannock Chase – J.R.R Tolkien is supposed to have cycled through them, but these days it’s a mountain biker’s paradise. Stafford is the perfect place to grab a quiet coffee and relax with friends. However, if you’re looking for a more interesting day out, Trentham and its Monkey Forest (yes, there are free-roaming monkeys here) is only 20 minutes away from the town and offers great discounts for students! Top: Riverside Shopping at Stafford. Bottom: TrenthamGardens Shropshire and its surrounding counties are an outdoor lover’s paradise. From rowing or on the River Severn to running white water in Mid to NorthWales, or mountain biking on Cannock Chase to hiking up the Wrekin or across The Stiperstones – there is plenty to do and explore. And when you are done for the day, there’s a vast range of night spots, restaurants and entertainment venues in local towns and villages. Image: Ascanio/Shutterstock HARPER.AC.UK | 125
