Harper Life Magazine 2020

Harper Life Nov 2020 — Following a successful career in sales, I held a range of fundraising positions within the independent school and charity sectors, raising funds for scholarships, annual funds and leading a major capital appeal. I joined Harper Adams University in 2018 as the Development Trust’s Head of Development. The role of the Harper Adams University Development Trust is to directly connect companies, alumni and other benefactors with the University’s mission of providing ‘Higher education and research for the delivery of a sustainable food chain and rural economy’ – either through the provision of scholarships for individual students or through philanthropic investment in University infrastructure and buildings. In my day-to-day work I help to bring this aim to life by working closely with our industry partners and individual benefactors to accommodate their specific motivations and requirements. This can be incredibly varied from working with an employer who wishes to secure the succession within their organisation, applying to Charitable Trusts for scholarship funds or capital grants for buildings, to advising individual benefactors on ways to support the University and our students, helping them to achieve the most impact in an area which matters to them. It is this variety of my role and the different levels of relationships that really appeal to me – also, coming from a farming family myself, I have a good understanding of the sector’s challenges. However, what truly drives me is to support young, passionate talent at the start of their careers, to see them grow in confidence and knowledge, which will lead to a successful career in an ever more important industry. I head up a small team and am supported by the Development Trust Chairman and our board of Trustees, and together we work hard to increase our network of the University’s supporters. We have been able to grow the Scholarship and Capital Programme in the last couple of years and many Harper Alumni have contributed to this success, either as donors or employers, and I therefore would like to thank you all for the support you have given to our students, it is hugely appreciated!
