Out and about Shopping The small market town of Newport is a pleasant place to shop, with supermarkets and high street stores for essentials as well as smaller specialist shops. Telford Shopping Centre is just ten miles away and boasts more than 160 shops, restaurants and cafés including House of Fraser, Waterstones, Game, Costa and Marks & Spencer. The county town of Shrewsbury combines high street stores with independent retailers. Stafford, Wolverhampton and the picturesque market towns of Bridgnorth and Much Wenlock are also worth a visit. Free minibus There is a regular minibus service during undergraduate terms: Monday to Saturday between Harper Adams and Newport, and another on Sunday directly to Telford Shopping Centre. Cinema, theatre and music Oakengates Theatre, Stafford Gatehouse and Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn, as well as Wolverhampton’s Grand Theatre, Civic Hall and Slade Rooms, offer a wide variety of music, comedy, plays and productions. Birmingham’s NEC and National Indoor Arena are great for music and shows, while the Hippodrome and Birmingham Rep offer a wide variety of music, theatre and ballet. Like films? Plenty of choice between Telford’s ten-screen Odeon cinema or new 11-screen Cineworld Imax cinema with D-Box seating. Food and drink There are about 12 pubs in and around Newport, and around 120 across Telford and Wrekin, from real ale pubs to clubs. Eateries range from traditional fish ‘n’ chip takeaways and pub grub to Chinese, Indian, Italian and fine dining. Telford’s new Southwater development offers Zizzi’s, Chimichanga’s, Nando’s, Bella Italia, Pizza Express, and Harvester. What’s on A selection of local events: • Farmer Phil’s Music Festival – more than 40 bands over three days. • Shropshire County Show – the county agricultural show. • Newport Agricultural Show. • Midland Game and Country Fair. • V Festival – two days of pop and rock music at Weston Park. • Shrewsbury Summer Season. • RAF Cosford Air Show. • Church Stretton and Ludlow Food Fairs. • Local produce markets. • CAMRA beer festivals. • Horse and dog racing – Ludlow, Uttoxeter, Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Days out Exploring from Harper Adams is easy with excellent road links – both the M54 and M6 are less than 20 minutes’ drive away. Here are some places current students suggest: • Alton Towers and Drayton Manor Park. • Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site. • Shropshire Hills Discovery Centre, Craven Arms. • Cannock Chase; Great for walkers, mountain biking and adventure play. Experience the GoApe tree top adventure course and Forest Segway Experience at Birches Valley Forest Centre. • Acton Scott – this historic working farm, in South Shropshire, was featured in the television programme Victorian Farm and offers a fascinating insight into rural life at the turn of the 19th century. • Birmingham, with its state-of-the-art Bull Ring complex, National Exhibition Centre (NEC), National Indoor Arena, Symphony Hall, shops, bars, restaurants, theatres, clubs and galleries is less than 40 miles away. • The beautiful walled city of Chester is around the same distance, while Manchester and Liverpool can be reached in little over an hour. • Staffordshire, dubbed the ‘Creative County’, is Shropshire’s near neighbour and home to the rocky beauty of The Roaches and Lord Lichfield’s ancestral home, Shugborough. • The campus is just a few miles from the Welsh border, with mountains, valleys and coast providing plenty of scope for field trips and leisure pursuits. • Spring and summer weekends can be used for a trip further away to Cheltenham, Gloucester, the Cotswolds, Peak District, or Staffordshire Moorlands. • For a cultural day out, try dozens of stately homes, National Trust properties, museums, gardens and country parks such as Attingham Park, Powys Castle, Cardingmill Valley and Wenlock Edge. 27 Image: Shutterstock
