Animal Production, Welfare and Veterinary Sciences Department The department is staffed by veterinary surgeons, veterinary nurses, and animal scientists who are focussed on teaching and research in the areas of animal science, husbandry and health; and veterinary nursing, pharmacy and physiotherapy. They are well supported by laboratory and farm- based technical staff with a wealth of experience and hands-on skills. The department contributes to a wide range of postgraduate programme areas, but plays a key role in the delivery of animal-related and agriculture courses. Crop and Environment Sciences Academic staff within this department lecture on many of the postgraduate courses and especially in the delivery of the agriculture, crop, countryside and land management awards. A wide range of expertise includes crop protection, crop production, field vegetables, fresh produce, soil and plant nutrition, environmental management, sustainable technologies, climate change, forestry, wildlife and conservation. Highly active in research, much of the work carried out by the department is funded commercially. Engineering Engineering staff are focussed on teaching and researching the design, development and testing of off-highway vehicles, agricultural vehicles and agricultural machinery. Our academic staff are professional engineers with expertise across a range of specialisms including robotics, mechatronics in agriculture and off-highway vehicles, off-highway vehicle stability control systems and mobility, automotive engineering, production line optimization, agricultural chemical application, CAD and 3D modelling. The department has strong relationships with some of the top names in engineering, including JCB, Claas, Jaguar Land Rover, CNH, BAE Systems, Niftylift, Terex, Bentley and John Deere. Food Science and Agri-food Supply Chain Management Staff expertise within this department encompasses a wide range of disciplines including food marketing, food business management, supply chain management, food policy, food ethics, food security, food microbiology and food science and technology. The department works extensively with the food industry providing a range of training, technical support, research, knowledge transfer and consultancy services. The aim of postgraduate degrees in this field are to prepare students for careers across the food chain and to be managers and leaders of food businesses and the wider industry supporting the safe and sustainable supply of food to a growing worldwide population. Land, Farm and Agri-business Management This wide-ranging department is concerned with the economic, environmental and social sustainability of the countryside, including land use, care of the countryside, farm and rural business management and environmental technologies. The department includes environmental scientists and practitioners who prepare students for the scientific, practical and social aspects of countryside management and natural landscape conservation. The department’s work contributes to the continued commercial success of rural-based businesses and policy formation on rural affairs through both the micro-study of business units and the analysis of the wider economic environment. The department is also responsible for a range of land and property management courses taught by professionals highly experienced in rural practice surveying, law, taxation, valuation, property and estate management and all other key areas of surveying practice. Staff work in close partnership with RICS (the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) to increase the number of qualified professional surveyors and achieve excellence at all levels of education.
